For "Mad Men's" Elisabeth Moss, clothes make the woman. That is, those early 1960's styles she wears as ambitious career girl Peggy are a vital part of her tuning into the role.
"It's weird, like, I forget most people just go to work and put on clothes like they wear in everyday life. Wearing hose, slips, petticoats and gloves feels natural to me now," says Moss. "It enables to you to become the character. I stand differently as Peggy. Even when I'm saying lines off-camera, I like to wear the heels. A lot of actors take off their
[period] shoes and wear something else, but to me, the shoes make you stand differently. They change your posture."
Does she get a spindly, walking-on-stilts feeling wearing those high heels?
"No, I feel like the opposite," answers Moss. "Heels give you confidence. They make you feel more powerful."
Moss will be seen in contemporary glam at the forthcoming 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, in which she's nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
"To be nominated with Glenn Close, Sally Field, Mariska Hargitay, Holly Hunter and Kyra Sedgwick -- for a 26-year-old to be with such beautiful women and beautiful actresses I've admired for many, many years -- to be in their company in any way is an honor," she says.
Certainly, playing Peggy has given her a lot to work with. Fans of the show will immediately recall the series' first season, when Peggy was pregnant and nobody knew it. Not even Peggy. This past season has seen her beginning to come into her own.
"I love that as much as she's been through, she's only 22 years old and she's still not jaded. It provides for a lot of drama," notes Moss.
Sweetening the job even more is the fact that her schedule allows her and her fiance, "Saturday Night Live's" Fred Armisen, to divide their time between coasts: "'SNL' goes September to May in New York, and 'Mad Men' shoots in Los Angeles in the summer."
Now, if they could just get viewers to tune in. "I am aware that the television critics, the reviews and awards made 'Mad Men' what it is," says Moss. "We don't have a lot of viewers, but with the
profile we have, our audience is growing and it's getting better. For
me, I'm so proud and happy to be on the show. It's a dream come true."
