It began with Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, then involved Quetelet, Binet, Teman, and eventually the U.S. Army. And today as a result we have a variety of intelligence tests that measure the intelligence quotient (IQ) of people.
While no consensus of opinion prevails about what such tests actually measure, their use in education has had great practical value in assigning children to suitable class groups and in predicting academic performance. There are many factors that are considered when determining an IQ.
